{"id":2934,"date":"2025-11-24T16:59:42","date_gmt":"2025-11-24T16:59:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/friendsofihes.org\/?p=2934"},"modified":"2025-11-24T17:00:44","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T17:00:44","slug":"a-week-with-ihes-and-friends-of-ihes-in-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/friendsofihes.org\/index.php\/2025\/11\/24\/a-week-with-ihes-and-friends-of-ihes-in-new-york\/","title":{"rendered":"A week with IHES and Friends of IHES in New York"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>From October 27 to 31, Friends of IHES hosted the Institute in New York for a series of major institutional events, including the 2025 Friends of IHES Gala at the Plaza Hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_46702\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ihes.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Copyright-%C2%A9Anne-Vandycke_-All-rights-reserved_Friends-of-IHES-Event-102825_R6A_R6A0727-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46702\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Luis \u00c1lvarez-Gaum\u00e9, Cinzia Da Via, Yuri Tschinkel, Emmanuel Ullmo and Marilyn Simons \u00a9 Anne Vandycke<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On October 28,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihes.fr\/en\/professeur\/thibault-damour-2\/\">Thibault Damour<\/a>, Permanent Professor of Physics Emeritus at IHES, was promoted&nbsp;<em>Officier de la l\u00e9gion d\u2019honneur<\/em>&nbsp;by his longtime friend&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean_Reno\">Jean Reno<\/a>&nbsp;at the Consulate General of France in New York, in recognition of his exceptional career and contributions to general relativity and astrophysics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That same day, at New York\u2019s prestigious&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theplazany.com\/\">Plaza Hotel<\/a>, Friends of IHES held its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihes.fr\/en\/2025-gala\/\">biannual Gala themed \u201cCinema &amp; Mathematics<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hosted by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldsciencefestival.com\/team_member\/tracy-day\/\">Tracy Day<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brian_Greene\">Brian Greene<\/a>, co-founders of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldsciencefestival.com\/\">World Science Festival<\/a>, the evening offered a unique moment at the crossroads of cinema and science. Nobel Prize\u2013winning physicist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kip_Thorne\">Kip Thorne<\/a>&nbsp;spoke about his role as scientific advisor and executive producer of Christopher Nolan\u2019s film&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nyc6RJEEe0U\"><em>Interstellar<\/em><\/a>. Matthew Brown \u2014 Director of&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oXGm9Vlfx4w\">The Man Who Knew Infinity<\/a>,&nbsp;<\/em>a biopic on the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan \u2014 then engaged in a discussion with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihes.fr\/en\/professeur\/hugo-duminil-copin-2\/\">Hugo Duminil-Copin<\/a>, Permanent Professor at IHES and Fields Medal laureate, about the deep and often unexpected links between cinema and mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_46843\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ihes.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/gala1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46843\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kip Thorne presenting at the Friends of IHES 2025 Cinema &amp; Mathematics Gala \u00a9 Roy Rochlin \/ Getty Images for Friends of IHES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The evening was also an opportunity to celebrate the appointment of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihes.fr\/en\/professeur\/hong-wang\/\">Hong Wang<\/a>&nbsp;as a Permanent Professor of Mathematics at IHES, in a joint position with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cims.nyu.edu\/dynamic\/\">New York University\u2019s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 a remarkable example of Franco-American scientific collaboration and an inspiration for women in science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the Gala\u2019s distinguished guests were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.palais.mc\/en\/princely-family\/h-s-h-prince-albert-ii\/biography-1-5.html\">H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco<\/a>;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newyork.consulfrance.org\/cedrik-fouriscot-consul-general-of-france-in-new-york\">C\u00e9drik Fouriscot<\/a>, Consul General of France in New York;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonsfoundation.org\/people\/marilyn-simons-2\/\">Marilyn Simons<\/a>, co-founder of the Simons Foundation and President of Friends of IHES;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/joseplacido\">Jos\u00e9 Placido<\/a>, CEO of BNP Paribas USA and CIB Americas;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihes.fr\/en\/professeur\/pierre-deligne-2\/\">Pierre Deligne<\/a>, Fields Medal and Abel Prize laureate, Former Permanent Professor at IHES;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihes.fr\/en\/professeur\/dennis-sullivan-2\/\">Dennis Sullivan<\/a>, Abel Prize laureate and Former Professor at IHES;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihes.fr\/en\/professeur\/gerard-ben-arous-2\/\">G\u00e9rard Ben Arous<\/a>, Director of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and holder of the Alexzandria Figueroa and Robert Penner Chair at IHES;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St%C3%A9phane_Mallat\">St\u00e9phane Mallat<\/a>, CNRS Gold Medal laureate; Thibault Damour, Emeritus Permanent Professor of physics at IHES and CNRS Gold Medal laureate; as well as all members of the Friends of IHES Board of Directors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Friends of IHES is grateful to its partners, donors, sponsors, and guests for their continued support. Thanks to their dedication, the evening succeeded in raising more than 1.3 million dollars in support of fundamental research in mathematics and theoretical physics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following day, over 200 high school students gathered at the Lyc\u00e9e Fran\u00e7ais de New York to attend a lecture by Hugo Duminil-Copin entitled&nbsp;<em>\u201cCan We Really Understand by Counting?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_46878\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ihes.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1000056384-1024x473.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46878\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hugo Duminil-Copin \u00a9 IHES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The event offered students a unique opportunity to explore how mathematics deepens our understanding of the world and to engage directly with a Fields Medal laureate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later in the week,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/nyu.edu\/delaram-kahrobaei\/\">Delaram Kahrobaei<\/a>\u2014mathematician, professor at Queens College, and member of the Friends of IHES board\u2014welcomed friends and supporters of the Institute for an intimate evening dedicated to academic freedom on Thursday, October 30.
