The\u00a0Friends of IHES 2025 Gala<\/a>\u00a0took place on October 28 at the\u00a0Plaza Hotel<\/a>\u00a0in New York City. Themed \u201cCinema & Mathematics,\u201d the evening was hosted by\u00a0Tracy Day<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Brian Greene<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0World Science Festival<\/a>, and offered a unique experience at the intersection of science and art.
<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

On the physics side, Nobel laureate Kip Thorne <\/a>shared insights from his role as Executive Producer and Scientific Advisor for Christopher Nolan<\/a>\u2019s Interstellar<\/em>. On the mathematics side, Director Matthew Brown, notably known for the biopic The Man Who Knew Infinity<\/em> <\/a>about the life of Indian mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan<\/a>, engaged in a conversation with Fields Medal laureate and IHES Permanent Professor of Mathematics Hugo Duminil-Copin.<\/a> Together, they explored the deep and often unexpected connections between cinema and mathematics, two universal languages of human creativity.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gala was also an opportunity to celebrate the appointment of Hong Wang<\/a> as a Permanent Professor of Mathematics at IHES, in a joint position with the NYU Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences\u2014a remarkable example of Franco-American scientific collaboration and an inspiration for women in STEM.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n

The evening brought together an exceptional group of distinguished guests, including H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco<\/a>;\u00a0C\u00e9drik Fouriscot<\/a>, Consul General of France in New York;\u00a0H.E. Maguy Maccario Doyle<\/a>, Ambassador of Monaco to the United States; Marilyn Simons<\/a>, Co-Founder of the Simons Foundation and Chair of Friends of IHES; Jos\u00e9 Placido<\/a>, CEO of BNP Paribas USA and CEO of CIB Americas; Pierre Deligne<\/a>, Fields Medalist, Abel Prize laureate, and former Permanent Professor of Mathematics at IHES;\u00a0Dennis Sullivan<\/a>, Abel Prize laureate and former Permanent Professor of Mathematics at IHES;\u00a0G\u00e9rard Ben Arous<\/a>, Director of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences;\u00a0St\u00e9phane Mallat<\/a>, 2025 CNRS Gold Medalist; Thibault Damour, Permanent Professor of Physics Emeritus at IHES; as well as the full\u00a0Board of Directors of Friends of IHES<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n
